Antonio Martín Fernández
PLAIN Ambassador for Spain
What first inspired you to get involved with plain language?
“I was working in government communications and saw firsthand how people struggled to understand official documents. That’s when I realized the power of plain language.”
How did you become a plain language ambassador?
“After years of simplifying texts in my job, I joined a professional network and started speaking at events. Eventually, I was invited to represent our region as an ambassador.”
Why is plain language important to you personally or professionally?
“Because language should include, not exclude. Plain language helps ensure that everyone has equal access to information — no matter their background.”
Can you describe a project where plain language made a real difference?
“We rewrote a government benefits form and saw a 30% drop in errors and calls for help. That’s when we knew it was working.”
What’s your process for simplifying a complex text?
“First, I try to understand the reader’s needs. Then I look for jargon, long sentences, or abstract ideas and rewrite them in everyday terms.”
