2023 Buenos Aires, Argentina

September 27 – 29, 2023 / Buenos Aires, Argentina

PLAIN’s 2023 conference Connecting cultures: creating bridges with clear communication, was in Argentina on 27 – 29 September in collaboration with the Observatorio de Lenguaje Claro (OBS) of the Law School At the National University at Buenos Aires.

The conference built on the OBS’ success in consolidating plain language knowledge from various fields into effective communication policies.

There are so many people to thank for making PLAIN2023 such a success. First, to my wonderful PLAIN Board, particularly the Conference team: Lodewijk Van der Noort, Natalia Torro, and Irene Stotko. Also, our co-hosts from the OBS: Judge Lorena Tula del Moral, Gisela Candarle, “Lightning” Lucas Koch, and from the Law School, Oscar Zoppi.

I’d also like to thank my predecessor, Margrethe Kvarenes, whose idea it was to make this conference happen. She sent us warm wishes saying, “get energized, inspired, and enlightened”. After listening to and talking with many of you during the conference, I believe that we have done just that. We have heard from plain language speakers from all over the world who have inspired us with their stories from countries where it’s just beginning, to ones where the movement is over half a century old. We have been enlightened by the ISO story, which continues to unfold thanks to the volunteers’ dedication and effort. PLAIN’s intention with this conference was to throw a spotlight on all the work being done in Latin America, and this has undoubtedly been achieved. We have also been energized by being together again in person after a particularly long and difficult break. Now, we’ll go back to our homes and workplaces ready to implement much of what we learned. We’ll continue to keep in touch via PLAIN’s website, where podcast highlights of the conference and other resources are posted.

On behalf of PLAIN, we hope to see you all there again soon! Until then, Chau!
